National Defence Academy (NDA) exam is all India national level examination conducted by Union government regulated- Union Public Service Commission for recruitment to services such as Indian Army, Air Force and Navy and Indian Naval Academy Courses. The selection process involves a written exam is followed by an interview.
Recently, UPSC have released a notification about the upcoming UPSC NDA 2025 exam. In all, 406 vacancies have been announced for the said exam. Out of the total of 400 vacancies, 31 are reserved for women. Eligibility Conditions:
To appear in NDA Exam 2025, a candidate must fulfill the following eligibility criteria:
1. A Candidate should be a citizen of:
- India or,
- Nepal or,
- Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
2. For Army Wing of National Defence Academy- 12thclass pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education conducted by a state education board or a university.
3. For Air Force and naval wings of National Defence Academy and 10+2 Cadet entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy- 12th Class pass with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent conducted by a State Education Board or a University.
4. Physical Fitness Requirements- A candidate must be physically fit according to the physical standards of NDA and NA (I) as provided in Annexure I. A candidate withdrawn on disciplinary grounds from the academies of NDA is not eligible to apply.
How to Apply:
Follow these steps to apply online for the UPSC NDA 2025 Exam:
1. Visit the official UPSC website: [https://www.upsc.gov.in]
2. Navigate to the “Examinations” section and click on “Apply Online.”
3. Register by filling out your basic details to generate a Registration ID and password.
4. Log in using your credentials and complete Part II of the application form.
5. Upload the required documents:
- Scanned photograph
- Signature
- ID proof (Aadhaar, PAN, Passport, etc.)
6. Pay the application fee via online mode (Debit/Credit Card/Net Banking).
7. Submit the NDA form and take a printout for future reference.
Stages of Selection:
The selection process for NDA & NA consists of three stages:
1. Written Examination
The written examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and serves as the first stage of the selection process. It is a pen-and-paper-based exam consisting of two papers:
- Mathematics: A 300-mark paper covering topics like Algebra, Calculus, Trigonometry, and more.
- General Ability Test (GAT): A 600-mark paper divided into English and General Knowledge sections. The GAT includes topics from Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography, Current Affairs, etc.
Key Points:
- The exam is conducted in two sessions on the same day.
- Each paper lasts 2.5 hours.
- Negative marking applies for incorrect answers (1/3rd of the mark assigned to the question).
2. SSB Interview
The Services Selection Board (SSB) interview is a five-day process designed to assess a candidate’s psychological aptitude, intelligence, and personality. It consists of two stages:
Stage 1: Screening
- Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR): Verbal and non-verbal reasoning tests.
- Picture Perception and Description Test (PPDT): Candidates view a picture for 30 seconds and write a story based on it.
Stage 2: Comprehensive Testing
This stage includes:
- Psychological Tests: Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), Word Association Test (WAT), Situation Reaction Test (SRT), and Self-Description Test (SD).
- Group Testing: Group Discussion, Group Planning Exercise, Progressive Group Task, and Command Task.
- Personal Interview: A one-on-one interview focusing on the candidate’s academic background, personal aspirations, and leadership qualities.
- Conference: Final assessment and recommendation by the board.
3. Medical Examination
Candidates recommended by the SSB undergo a detailed medical examination to ensure they meet the physical and medical standards required for armed forces.

- Absence of any chronic medical conditions or physical deformities
Candidates must be declared medically fit to proceed to the final merit list.
Age Limit/Relaxation
Only those candidates who are unmarried are eligible to apply. Candidates who were born not earlier than 2nd July, 2006, and not later than 1st July, 2009 are eligible to apply.
Note: Candidates should note that the date of birth as mentioned in the Matriculation/Secondary School Examination Certificate or in any other equivalent certificate will be accepted as the official DOB of the candidate.
