When Should You Start Solving PYQs for NEET & JEE?

 A Month-by-Month Guide

There are many JEE/NEET youtubers, blogs, reddit threads, available but there’s one thing that is common to all—the importance of solving previous year questions (PYQs) regularly. Everyone advises aspirants to keep on practicing PYQs but very few give a  guide on how to include PYQs into your study schedule. We will take you through the steps to solving PYQs and how to add them to your work plan.

The Importance of PYQs in JEE and NEET Preparation

PYQ papers are important tools that make aspirants get an understanding of the exam pattern, type of questions asked, chapter-weightage, topic-weightage, and difficulty level of topics/questions asked. Repeated solving of questions makes you stronger on your basic material and builds confidence for the actual paper. It makes students comfortable with giving the real exam and increases question solving speed.

Month-by-Month Guide

By choosing  a chapter-wise PYQ book that will follow the order of NCERT chapters, you can easily go through 10 years of past papers before the exam with more than enough time left for revision.

June to August

  • From June to August focus on building a strong foundation of basic concepts. Don’t jump into full-length PYQs but  practice only the questions for the topic you are prepared with.

  • Disha's 183 JEE Mains PYQ or Disha's 38 Year NEET PYQ follow NCERT’s chapter sequence and PYQs are organised chapter-wise, making it easier to cover questions as and when you’re done with a topic.

  • Go through trend analysis and start focusing on commonly asked topics

August to October

  • Start practicing PYQs of a mix of topics and different types of questions and time yourself to know how your progress is going.

  • Make sure that you complete Class XI chapters by the end of October.

October to December

  • By now you must be done with many chapters of Class XII. Start solving PYQs for NEET or JEE subject-wise. For example, go through the complete Biology section or the entire Physics section.

December to February

  • Start doing full-length papers now. Start solving JEE Mains or NEET complete papers and see how much time it takes you.

  • Make sure that the PYQs come with errorless solutions so that you can check your answers and learn how to solve the questions you don’t know.

February to exam date

  • Start solving mock tests now, as they will help you check your overall exam preparedness.

  • Mock Tests will help you know the sections and topics that need more revision.

  • Revise the sections that you found difficult in the PYQs.

  • Make sure that you solve one question paper every day within the exam time limit.

It is important that you stay regular throughout the preparation period. The more PYQs you solve the more correctly and quickly you’ll be able to finish the real exam. It will seem difficult in the beginning but with determination and hardwork you can achieve your dream.
