Unlocking the Timeless Wisdom of the Bhagvad Gita for Parenting: Raising Honest and Compassionate Kids

Bhagvad Gita is the fundamental religious text within Hinduism. It is an essential part of the epic poem Mahabharata composed by Veda Vyasa. It is in the form of a dialogue between Shri Krishna and Arjuna which took place before the beginning of the great war of Mahabharata. It is primarily a sermon which serves as an effective guide towards living a spiritually enlightened, fulfilling and purposeful life. The values and eternal truths expounded in the Bhagvad Gita serve as a model for good parenting in today’s fast-paced world.

Main teachings for Parenting:

One of the major teachings expounded by the Bhagvad Gita, extremely relevant for good parenting, is upholding values of righteousness or Dharma. In today’s world, children get easily influenced by their peers and or digital content and adopt a way of life that does not accord with the moral standards of the day. It is in these situations that the role of parents becomes paramount. Parents must guide their wards towards cultivating ethical modes of behaviour by imbibing values of honesty, integrity and dedication towards one’s work without regard to the results.

Parents play a crucial role in helping their wards imbibe the value of selfless action  which form the bedrock of the Bhagvad Gita philosophy. Parents play a pivotal role in the upbring of their children by making them understand the significance of detaching their mind from aunty concern for results and performing their deeds with complete dedication and sincerity.  Parents must ensure that their children don’t get emotionally attached to the outcomes of their actions. They must not get swayed away by successes and also not sink into deep depression and despair when confronted with failures. They should ensure that their child maintains equanimity in face of all kinds of situations.

Encouraging Compassion and Respect

The Gita imparts lessons in compassion and respect towards all beings, humans and animals alike. Regarding everyone with equal respect and dignity is one of the basic tenets of Bhagvad Gita. Parents must cultivate virtues of compassion in their children since this is one of the hallmarks of living a morally upright life. Parents must narrate stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata to illustrate the major teachings preached by the Bhagvad Gita. They should try to instill values of righteousness, honesty and integrity as are exhibited by major characters like Yudhisthira, Rama and Arjuna in their children. These characters will serve as the perfect model of virtue and morality that children can always look up to.

Small acts like helping the needy, respecting elders and helping a classmate will make students socially responsible and enable them to develop values of selfless service. Such values will contribute towards the moral development of a child and enable him to adopt an ethical standard of living. With such values, a child will learn to make valuable personal contributions to society.

Becoming role models for their wards

Before cultivating values of self-restraint and compassion in their children, parents must try to develop these values themselves. Most of the values children learn come from their parents. It is the responsibility of parents to cultivate values of self-restraint and compassion, which then serve as a model for children to emulate. Parents must lead by example. Bhagvad Gita teaches us virtues of right conduct and ethical living that are central to  good and effective parenting. We cannot preach  values to children that we don’t practise ourselves. Hence, it becomes increasingly significant for parents to internalise the core philosophy of Bhagvad Gita and then impart the major philosophical insights to their children.

Conclusion

Bhagvad Gita is not only an important religious text in Hinduism but a spiritual guide for leading a virtuous and a meaningful life. The teachings and sermons of Gita must form the bedrock of good parenting. Parents play a pivotal role in shaping the future of a child and the timeless wisdom of  Bhagvad Gita provides a blueprint for an ideal way of life that must be integrated into the process of upbringing of a child.
